Set in China during the warring 1920s, notorious bandit chief Zhang descends upon a remote provincial town posing as its new mayor, an identity that he had hijacked from the former mayor, himself a small-time imposter. Hell-bent on making a fast buck, Zhang soon meets his match in the tyrannical local gentry Wang who seems to have more than the goodwill of the townspeople on his mind. The bullets fly as a deadly battle of wit and brutality ensues with each trying to dislodge the other from his seat of power. Acclaimed director Jiang Wen (Devils on the Doorstep, The Sun Also Rises) brings his own brand of dark humor to this blazing Chinese western which unites for the first time three of the top names in Chinese cinema.
